Wildlife in Wayanad, India

Experience wildlife wherever you go

I have visited Wayanad again in south of India. Wayanad have a lot of farms, nice nature and green scenery. I wanted to focus on wildlife on this visit. There are national parks nearby but I find that most places near the forest are the best to see wild elephants and monkeys.

I got lucky and saw a lot of birds. I liked the big bird called Crested Hawk Eagle which is very good at blending in with the environment around it. We almost did not see this bird it was up in the tree tops far away.

I saw the same kind of bird at another place. It has a funny look, it has few feathers sticking up from the head.

When you are traveling in Wayanad and drive through the forest area you might get to see wild elephants. Sometimes you have to be lucky. I have seen wild elephants every time I have passed by there. This time I saw a baby elephant too. Elephants are very protective so keep a distance or you might get in trouble.

Grey Langur (monkey) is common in the national parks. You can find them in big groups.

The most common animal you will see are deers.

This time I got to see a species called Sambhar. It is darker in color and looks little different from the rest of the deers. The Sambhar is one of the tigers favorite food. So if you find a Sambhar you might be lucky to even find a tiger nearby.

I have also learnt that if you spend enough time at one place the birds will eventually show up. You just have to have patience. Wayanad have a huge variety of small birds. In the garden and on the top of the trees you will find many different birds. I like to share some pictures of the birds I saw in the garden where I was staying.

Last but not least, the insects. Near ponds you will easily find big dragonflies and butterflies. In the garden there were a big pond and lots of different colors of the dragonflies. I found it easier to take a picture of a dragonfly here then in Europe, because here they at least stay still for awhile when they rest in the sun. I actually had to use a long telezoom lens to capture the pictures below. If I would come close they would take off very fast.

I hope you got a insight of the wildlife and rich bird life in Wayanad in Kerala. Of course Wayanad has so much more to offer when it comes to wildlife. I like that you can find so many animals right where you are. You will find something new to take pictures of every day.
